FAQs about the Parks and Garden Club
- Started in February of 2005, The Southfield Parks and Garden Club was formed to fill a vision of having a group of volunteers to do charitable community service work within the city and surrounding area.
- We began by doing litter pickups, planting flowers for the city and school system, and cleaning/brightening up the front landscapes of needy residents. Clearing and mapping of city park trails, a Horticultural Enrichment program, and the “Fine Place Award” were added during the year.
- We co-sponsor and help judge Southfield's Community Pride Awards.
- In 2006 we incorporated and gained “charitable organization” [501(c)(3)] status. In 2007 we began our annual Southfield Garden Walk program. In 2008 we broke ground on the Emmanuel Community Farm, whose main purpose is to grow and harvest healthy, fresh fruit and vegetables for the hungry. The Farm also offers the opportunity to learn about organic gardening and other good horticultural practices.
- Our membership reflects a wide cross-section of people within and outside of the city.
- SP&GC has monthly meetings on the first Tuesday of the month, from March through October each year. Meetings start at 7 pm, running to about 8:30, and are usually held in the Room 112 of the Parks and Recreation building at the Southfield Civic Center. However, as of summer 2021 we are still meeting online. If you are interested in attending a future meeting, send an email to [email protected].
- Most everything the Club does has something to do with the earth and land around us. We are not your everyday garden club. We are a true charity, helping those around us who are in need. Please think about volunteering, joining the Club, or sending in a donation.
- The Club is an all-volunteer organization, with no paid staff. We purchase as much as possible from local companies.
