From mid-June on, its pick, pick, pick
When we pick in the afternoon, the produce goes to Forgotten Harvest the next morning. Chances are, it will be on someone's plate that night. It might be better to pick in the morning, but it is hard to find volunteers as the sun comes up. We hope that by tasting fresh fruit an vegetables, some of the less fortunate will want to have more -- enough to look around for a local garden to participate with.
Here, Jerry is picking leaf lettuce. The hoops hold up shade fabric to keep the lettuce cool. It also keeps some of the insects at bay. When we are done harvesting from a plant, we cut it off at ground level, leaving the roots in the ground to rot and help soil health. Tops go to the compost pile. |
